Malaysia Targets Five Gold Medals with 81-Athlete Team at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in one of the world’s premier multi-sport events.

Malaysia will send an 81-athlete contingent despite the reduced sports programme, with several traditional medal events no longer included. Led by a mix of experienced champions and rising stars, the national team will aim to achieve its target of five gold medals in Glasgow.

Here’s everything you need to know about Malaysia’s campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026: What to Know

The 2026 Commonwealth Games mark the 23rd edition of the multi-sport event involving athletes from Commonwealth nations.

Originally awarded to Victoria, Australia, the Games were relocated after the Australian state withdrew in 2023 because of rising hosting costs. Glasgow, which successfully hosted the event in 2014, was selected as the replacement host.

To reduce operational expenses, organizers have streamlined the competition to 10 sports, down from 19 sports at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, making Glasgow 2026 one of the smallest editions in recent history.

Malaysia’s Contingent and Medal Target

Malaysia’s contingent consists of 59 athletes and 22 para athletes heading to Glasgow.

The national contingent will be led by Chef de Mission (CdM) Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz. Instead of staying in a centralized athletes’ village, competitors will be accommodated in hotels located close to their respective competition venues.

Despite sending a smaller team, Malaysia remains confident of achieving its medal ambitions by focusing on athletes with the strongest podium potential.

The National Sports Council (NSC) has set a target of five gold, two silver, and four bronze medals, with the country’s strongest medal hopes expected to come from weightlifting, track cycling, lawn bowls, and para athletics.

Sports Malaysia Will Compete In

A total of 10 sports will be contested at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games:

  • Athletics
  • Swimming
  • Artistic Gymnastics
  • Track Cycling
  • Netball
  • Weightlifting
  • Boxing
  • Judo
  • Bowling
  • 3×3 Basketball

Malaysia will compete in 8 of the 10 sports, opting not to enter boxing and netball.

Compared with the Birmingham 2022 Games, several sports traditionally associated with Malaysian medal success have been removed from the programm, including badminton, diving, hockey, & squash. Their absence significantly reduces Malaysia’s medal opportunities.

Malaysia’s Top Medal Hopes

Several established stars and emerging talents are expected to spearhead Malaysia’s medal challenge in Glasgow.

– Datuk Abdul Latif Romly (Para Athletics)

The reigning world champion in the T20 long jump remains Malaysia’s biggest gold medal hope and will aim to defend his title while continuing his dominance in the event.

– Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (Weightlifting)

Competing in the men’s 60kg category, Aniq enters the Games as one of Malaysia’s strongest medal prospects after climbing the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) rankings.

– Muhamad Aznil Bidin (Weightlifting)

The defending Commonwealth Games champion in the 65kg division returns to Glasgow with the goal of retaining his title.

– Khiew Hoe Yean (Swimming)

Malaysia’s leading distance swimmer will spearhead the men’s swimming team and is expected to challenge for finals qualification in both individual and relay events.

– Muhammad Erry Hidayat (Weightlifting)

Competing in the men’s 79kg category, Erry qualified through the IWF rankings and will look to strengthen Malaysia’s medal hopes in weightlifting.

Malaysia Ready for the Challenge

Although Malaysia will compete with a smaller contingent than in previous editions, the country’s medal ambitions remain unchanged. With a balanced squad featuring experienced champions and promising newcomers, Malaysia will look to capitalize on its strengths and deliver another memorable performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
