SUKMA Returns to Selangor After 28 Years
The 2026 Malaysia Games mark Selangor’s return as host after 28 years. The state last hosted SUKMA in 1998, making this edition a significant occasion for Selangor’s sporting community.
The Games are being staged across venues in Selangor, with competitions taking place throughout the state. The event provides young Malaysian athletes with a national-level platform to compete against leading athletes from other state contingents.
Selangor is also aiming to reclaim the overall SUKMA title on home soil. The state has won the overall championship nine times, more than any other state, and is targeting its 10th title in 2026.
37 Sports and Hundreds of Medal Events
SUKMA Selangor 2026 features 37 sports, covering a wide range of disciplines including athletics, badminton, basketball, cycling, swimming, football and water polo.
The latest reports state that 468 gold medals are being contested across the 37 sports. This figure reflects the latest competition programme and replaces earlier figures of 474 events that appeared in pre-Games planning information.
With thousands of athletes competing across multiple venues, SUKMA remains one of Malaysia’s major national sporting platforms for young competitors seeking experience at a high level.
Selangor Targets a Return to the Top
Selangor entered the Games with a target of winning 80 gold medals and reclaiming the overall championship.
The host state last won the overall SUKMA title in 2016. At the 2024 Games in Sarawak, Selangor finished third overall with 56 gold medals, while Sarawak won the championship with 76 gold medals.
The home advantage will therefore be an important factor as Selangor attempts to return to the top of the overall standings.

A Platform for Malaysia’s Next Generation
Beyond the medal standings, SUKMA plays an important role in identifying and developing young sporting talent in Malaysia.
The 2026 edition provides athletes with the opportunity to compete against strong opposition, gain experience in major multi-sport competition and build their credentials for future national-level opportunities.
Danish’s continued progress is one example of how athletes can use SUKMA as a stepping stone toward higher levels of competition. His performances at SUKMA and the SEA Games demonstrate the pathway from state-level competition to representing Malaysia internationally.
More Action to Come
With SUKMA Selangor 2026 continuing until 24 August, the medal race remains open and more individual performances are expected to attract attention.
For Selangor, the main objective is clear: convert home advantage into enough gold medals to challenge for the overall championship. For the athletes, the Games offer an opportunity to establish themselves on Malaysia’s sporting stage.
As competition continues across 37 sports, SUKMA Selangor 2026 will not only determine the state medal standings but also provide another important chapter in the development of Malaysia’s next generation of athletes.
