Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has been ruled out of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, dealing a major blow to both club and country.
The 23-year-old Dutch international sustained the injury during Tottenham’s 1–0 away victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, April 25. Simons was stretchered off in the 63rd minute after his knee twisted awkwardly while chasing the ball, with subsequent medical assessments confirming a torn ACL.
The diagnosis means Simons will miss the World Cup, ending what had been a highly anticipated opportunity to play a key role for the Netherlands national football team on football’s biggest stage.
Major Blow for Spurs
Simons’ absence is a significant setback for Tottenham, particularly for newly appointed head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who was expected to rely on the midfielder’s creativity and attacking influence.
Despite securing their first win in 16 matches against Wolves, Spurs remain 18th in the standings and are locked in a tense battle to avoid relegation. Losing one of their key players at this stage of the season further complicates their survival hopes.
Netherlands Lose a Key Figure
For the Netherlands, the injury also represents a major setback. Head coach Ronald Koeman had increasingly entrusted Simons with an important role in the national team setup.

In 2026, Simons has made 34 appearances and scored six goals—figures that underline his growing importance within the squad.
With the World Cup approaching, Koeman must now reassess his midfield options as the Dutch prepare for the tournament without one of their brightest young talents.
Uncertain Road Ahead
Simons is expected to undergo surgery followed by a lengthy rehabilitation period, typically ranging from six to nine months for ACL injuries. While the focus now shifts to recovery, the setback halts what had been a rapidly rising trajectory for one of Europe’s most promising midfielders.
For both Tottenham and the Netherlands, the timing could hardly be worse.
